Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1996
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

The urgent need for such an initiative was recognised as a result of the information provided by the F.E.M Women's Health Centre (a monthly series of lectures on the menopause)

Target group(s): Women threatened by, or suffering from osteoporosis
Targets: Help for the effected women, compiling information on the theme of osteoporosis and on how to deal with or prevent it.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

- Promotion of health through information and enlightenment
- Promotion of movement through a special exercise programme
- Help towards developing individual nourishment strategies
- Promotion of personal capacities
- Promotion of a sense of responsibilty for self
- Allaying fears
- Help towards applying the information in one's personal life and activities, through lectures by specialists, individual information, self-help groups, series of courses extending over several weeks, a fixed information evening, a library and recommended reading material.

Areas of work of the initiative:
Care
Leisure/sport
Social contacts
Health
Mobility
Security/protection
Success that the initiative has achieved:

Improvements in both physical and mental states. This stimulated great interest among the groups and positive responses from the SHG. There is also still a great interest in the events. Foundation of an umbrella organisastion.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

Patients can feel insecure. There is not enough information available about what can be done to prevent osteoporosis.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

Seminars which the women attend; surveys undertaken on the streets; talks at the SHG; evaluation through questionnaires.

Co-operation:

Since it was founded, the initiative has been cooperating with 10F and the SHG; the Austrian osteoporosis umbrella organisation.
