About the initiative
Status of the initiative: The initiative is a self-help initiative aimed at improving equal opportunities for older women through an organisation that pursues objectives which are independent of gender or age.
The initiative is independent and has the following legal form: registered assocation

Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1979
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons: This self-help group for women with breast cancer was set up by Fr. Martha Frühwirt, who herself was effected by the problem, because there was so little information available on the theme at the time.
Target group(s): Women of all ages effected by breast cancer, before and after surgery, and their relatives.
Targets: Information, exchange of views, counselling, psychological care, events, courses, lectures, and consideration of the needs of women suffering from breast cancer.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

-General care: voicing of anxieties and views, advice
-Psychological care: individual or in groups, by psychotherapists
-Events and courses: spine gymnastics, autogenic training, relaxation exercises, Tai chi, Yoga, healthy nutrition, swimming, handicrafts etc.
-Social events: birthday parties, carneval celebrations, Christmas celebrations, theatre evenings, excursions, exhibitions etc.
-Lectures and information: lectures and subsequent discussions with doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, nutrition specialists etc.
-Printed material can be requested free of charge: "Wie soll es weitergehen?", "Du und die Strahlentherapie", "Chemotherapie", "Merkblatt zur Hand- und Armpflege"
-Rehabilitation: massage, gymnastics, manual lymph drainage, advice on and care of lymph oedema
- Staff training: several 3-4-day seminars annually, further training, supervision, participation in seminars and intentional congresses.

Success that the initiative has achieved:

Better information on the illness for the women effected, intensification of the quality of life, cooperation with doctors and hospitals, recognition by the health service.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

Too little support from the public authorities, consequently staff difficulties, as the honorary work is done exclusively by sick women.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:
Co-operation:

Since 1979 with the Austrian cancer association, the German cancer association, Reach to Recovery International, UICC, A.N.D.O.S.
