Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1990
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

Lia was initiated to help women cater for their old age, with the aim of helping to be able to live their life in freedom and dignity together with other women.

Target group(s): Women from the age of 40 onwards
Targets: Women should have the possibility in their old age of preserving their female lifestyles, having their needs considered and their financial security improved.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

Lia is active at various levels:
Lia groups are self-organised groups that exchange views among themselves and undertake joint outings.
Lia project groups are enterprises for helping women realise their ideas (for example, opening a café, offering counselling, practices, etc.)
The Lia women's network accepts all interested women, facilitates contacts and serves as a women's lobby.
Lia service centres offer women out-patients care, household help, psycho-social care and advice.
The Nümbrechter Model is a housing project aimed at the needs of women over 40 and will probagbly be ready by the end of the year 2000; it includes a health centre for short-term care, day care, transitional care and rehabilitation, plus four living sections for secure housing, with a total of 72 flats of 45-90 sq.m. each.

Areas of work of the initiative:
Care
Social contacts
Education
Health
Living circumstances
Success that the initiative has achieved:

The Lia women's network extends all over Germany. Some of the project groups are very successful.
200 applications have already been received to live in the Nümbrechter Modell.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

Often the fact that we specialise in women, as it were, is questioned and rejected, which gives rise to particular difficulties when negotiating with banks etc.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

Some members of the board are potential residents in the Nümbrechter Model, they are all members of the Lia women's network, most of the women involved in our work are over 40.

Co-operation:

We do not work with other initiatives either at national or international level.
