Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1985
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

The motivation for founding this self-help initiative came from discussions on the question of how women would like to live in their old age. What alternatives are there to living alone with its concommitant threat of isolation, and living in an institution such as a home for older women? How can women shape their life-style themselves?

Target group(s): Women of 50 and older who live alone; women in search of elective affinities or circles of female friends.
Targets: Promotion of the concept of older women living together in groups with women of similar interests.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

The project brings together women suffering from loneliness or isolation. Alternative ways of living are discussed and the women encouraged to actively shape their lives in their old age. To do this, the women form interest groups and undertake activities together. They organise discussion and working groups and in this way work out a basis for a possible communal life together (thereby remaining as independent as possible) based on mutual recognition and support.

Areas of work of the initiative:
Social contacts
Health
Living circumstances
An independent style of life in old age
Success that the initiative has achieved:

The work of our intiative has given rise to the setting up of several communal residences; there are also many similar housing projects for both men and women. Our women's project is still a pilot project.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

One big problem is that our subsidies have been reduced, which means, among other things, that we can only employ one full-time person for the work.
Because of economic and social depression, older and old women are withdrawing more and more.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

As a self-help project we encourage the women to become involved in the concept, planning and implementation of the tasks.

Co-operation:

Since 1985, when we began working as an initiative, we have been cooperating with different women's projects and residential projects. We organise joint meetings to exchange views, seminars, workshops and conferences (for example on "Living Forms").

Information:

We are available for people interested in receiving more information on our initiative by phone.

Tips and suggestions for people interested in foundig a similar initiative:

Such an initiative demands political involvement and financing by several sponsors. An attempt should be made to interest women in this idea when they are in their middle years.
