Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1999
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

There was a lack of opportunities in Frankfurt for middle-aged and older German and non-German women to meet. At the time, some of the group's initiators, who had known one another for many years, were working with the organisation "infrau" organising intercultural encounters with migrant women. Their clientele and the "Seniorenwerkstatt" got together on a pilot project financed by the Social Welfare Office of the City of Frankfurt. Thanks to advertising, other women have since joined the group.

The initiative was founded for a limited period of time:

The project ran from February to May 1999 as a cooperation project and was then taken over and continued by the "Seniorenwerkstatt", which has also been financing it since September 1999.

Target group(s): Women from different ethnic groups, from different countries, of different religions and from different social strata.
Targets: Cultural education for everyone,
Elimination of prejudices through exchanges of information on the values and traditions of the various cultures,
Promotion of creativity, independence and competence through artistic and craft work.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

The project teams are always led jointly by a Turkish and a German woman.
So far we have dealt with the following themes: painting on silk, paper and fabric, bookbinding and collage; all about cloth, exchanges of information on greeting rituals and hospitality customs, views of biographies, rites associated with the Newroz festival, decorations for Easter; exchanges of recipies, joint cooking, around the world with music and song; final international festival.
15 German women between the ages of 59-80 and 10 non-Germans between 49-70 took part in the activities of the International Women's Circle.
The project is being continued once a week and the programme will include craftwork, socially relevant themes and women's issues, excursions, sightseeing, visits to interesting points in and around Frankfurt, musical evenings and much more.

Areas of work of the initiative:
Social contacts
Education
Health
The fields of arts and crafts
Success that the initiative has achieved:

In a relatively short space of time we managed to bring together two initially separate groups (women migrants and older German women) closer together, above all, through personal encounters and discussions. To quote one participant: "Without such projects, I see no possibility for us old women to get to know women from other cultures."
Meantime, Turkish, Indian and Eastern European women also visit other groups associated with the "Seniorenwerkstatt".

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

We suffer from a lack of funds and staff. Occasionally, we are confronted with prejudices on the part of women in other Seniorenwerkstatt groups about the work of the International Women's Circle.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

The women are involved in selecting the topics, they help with the shopping and in preparing for and clearing up after the morning meetings.

Co-operation:

Initially, our project cooperated with the "infrau" project in Frankfurt am Main. We carried out the work jointly, using the existing infrastructure and forming mixed teams.
