Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1983
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

The ambet Association, a registered charity, was founded by social workers wishing to improve the domestic situation of elderly people.

Target group(s): The actual target group for the residential communities is older women and men. But in fact only older women live in the 7 existing residential communities.
Targets: Communal living is aimed at preventing loneliness and isolation. The aim is to help the residents maintain their sense of personal responsibility and decide for themselves how to live their lives, while at the same time providing them with care and support.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

Four or five women live together in the residential groups, using the kitchen and bathroom in common. Individual living rooms and bedrooms may be furnished individually with the resident's own furniture.
The flats are equipped to suit the needs of the elderly and infirm. Services to which the residents have access include household care, medical and nursing services, rehabilitation and counselling services, and a residence emergency call service. The residential groups are looked after by an educational expert. Thus even in cases of prolonged and serious illness, it is possible for those needing care to remain in the residential group.

Areas of work of the initiative:
Care
Social contacts
Living circumstances
Success that the initiative has achieved:

The ambet Association, a registered charity, now has some 90 staff members and 7 residential communities under its care.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:
Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

The residents participate in choosing new residents. Thus in 6 of the 7 residential groups the women have explicitly refused to accept men into the group, although the groups are in theory open to both sexes.
