Content and framework conditions of the project work
The initiative was founded in: 1988
The initiative was founded because of the following reasons:

The association was created on the initiative of women of African origin who are working for integration.

Target group(s): Foreign and French women.
Targets: Helping to solve family conflicts, for instance those that arise when a man reaches retirement and wants to return to his native country, whereas his wife and children want to continue to live in France. In this case, thanks to our intervention, the family stayed in France.
Details of the work done by the initiative:

Socio-cultural co-ordination, in which we form the link between the foreign family and French institutions;
- literacy courses for women;
- Sewing with women;
- cultural visits/trips;
- discussion groups.

Areas of work of the initiative:

Literacy courses - married life
Success that the initiative has achieved:

- Official recognition by Madame Martine Aubry und Madame Nicole Perry [the present minister of social affairs and parliamentary secretary for women's rights respectively - translator's note];
- the "Olympe d'Or" trophy for our reality-based acts of intervention - for instance to prevent the excision of young girls and their forced marriage, as well as to combat polygamy.

Problems that the initiative has been faced during its work:

Regulating the situation of the 2nd and 3rd wife in cases of polygamy - although we categorically reject polygamy.

Participation of the target group concerning the conception, planning and implementation of the initiative's work:

In that we challenge them to join our association and actively participate in our campaigns and cultural events.

Co-operation:

Since 1988 we have been co-operating with several associations in the fight against AIDS: AIDES, GRDR - Groupe de Recherche du Développement Rural (Research Group on Rural Development), Sol-en-Si - Solidarité Enfance SIDA (Solidarity-Childhood-AIDS), Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) and Gynécos sans Frontière (Gynecologists without Borders), as well as the SSAE - Service social d'Aide aux Emigrés (Social Service for the Assistance of Immigrants).
