Abstract:

There are fewer older people working in Austria today than in most of the other European industrial nations. The number of unemployed people waiting to be pensioned is constantly increasing. A person around the age of 50 who loses their job has very little chance of finding another one. This study shows why the exclusion of older people from the labour market is neither financially feasible in the mid-term, nor desireable from the point of view of employment policy. It underscores the urgent need for this group to be productively integrated into the labour market. There is a special chapter devoted to the specific situation of older women on that market.
