| Abstract: "The rapidly rising percentage of older people in the total population
is a historically new phenomenon which is increasingly changing social structures. 'Grey
societies' are developing, and with them new social, political, economic and cultural
problems with which no previous society has been confronted - neither qualitatively nor
quantitatively. This introduction summarises in a systematic and clear manner research
results so far, pointing out deficits and describing perspectives for the future.
