Background

Some of the problems that affect the present generation of older women much more than older men are the higher risk of unemployment, poverty, the burden of nursing someone, isolation and higher personal safety risks, mobility problems, lack of education and a more difficult access to decision-making processes. The latter finding, in fact, is expressed in two different ways: experience shows that in women’s political groups the views and interests of younger women are dominant; while political groups for senior citizens are firmly controlled by men and in the best case the selected themes affect both sexes equally.

Target

The project aims to increase public awareness of the problems and needs of older women, to inform people of initiatives that intend to promote equal opportunities and to help ensure rights of equal opportunity. To this end, political, scientific and practical information will be gathered in Germany, France and Austria, duly processed and made available to the broadest possible audience.

Target Group

This information is focused particularly at older women and their family, members of institutions and associations, scientists and political decision-makers.

Method

Work started on July 1999 and should be completed by June 2000. Information will be collected on:

Currently existing initiatives by older women regarding self-help and promotion of their own interests,
Practices implemented by organisations with trans-gender objectives that consider the particular interests and needs of older women,
literature and scientific studies concerned with the situation of older women,
Political measures and programmes that aim to promote equal rights for older women.
Results

This information will be offered on the Internet in German, English and French under the form of an information pool. To this pool will be attached a forum for discussion that not only gives older women a voice, but also makes it possible to exchange experiences between those working in the field and those defending political interests. Together with the creation of this information pool, representatives from women’s associations will carry out PR work in the different countries involved in this project.
